One of our pop girls from our childhood is back in action. Alessia Cara has dropped her most recent love bomb with Love & Hyperbole. Known for her emotive melodies and story-telling lyrics, she continues weaving together a narrative of love and self-discovery. A dash of love, a touch of angst, and a hint of fear about growing older might just be the perfect ingredients for an unforgettable album.
Reflecting on her journey since The Pains of Growing, Alessia acknowledges that the DNA of her earlier work still lingers in this new album. She described her past self as somewhat closed off, fueled by angst and a natural stubbornness. Now, she sees herself as more expansive, allowing those once-negative emotions to transform into something more present and open. Rather than pushing away this change, Alessia has used it as a tool for connection. One of the most beautiful things about watching an artist grow is to observe their journey with certain emotions. Her past works have described this yearning bubble of love. With Love & Hyperbole, she has a whole new sense of self with love. This sense of belonging has influenced her songwriting, adding a newfound warmth to her music. Another prominent theme is her evolving relationship with time and aging, a concept that has always lingered in her thoughts- causing anxiety. Confronting this fear through her lyrics, she noted, “I am the youngest I will ever be, but also the oldest I will ever be.” When asked by Nevin from Set List Media about the most impactful part of the album’s production, Alessia expressed her excitement about recording Love & Hyperbole in a more immersive, live setting. She had the opportunity to record 90% of the album alongside live musicians, including a horn section and orchestra, allowing her to feed off their energy and create something deeply organic. This shift from a more computer-driven production process resulted in a richer sound that she believes captures the essence of music as a communal experience.
In response to a question from HoneyPop about her “Made by Alessia Cara” series, she revealed that this is the first time she has consciously crafted “mini worlds” within each track. Unlike traditional album releases, where pop culture tends to highlight only a couple of lead singles, she had the creative freedom to experiment with storytelling across the entire record. It was clear this album is made to be heard as the whole album. Every single track goes into each other and paints out her true feelings. She actually felt that it was easier to engage her fans this way. She was able to work in certain easter eggs and special surprises for fans who were paying close attention. It is clear that as much as it is fun for the fans, she is having fun portraying the album how she wants to.
A touch of love, a dash of angst might just be the perfect ingredients for an exceptional album. Love & Hyperbole marks a defining moment in Alessia Cara’s career, demonstrating both her growth as an artist and her willingness to explore new creative territories. This is genuinely one of her best works to-date. It encapsulates the beauty (or horror) we all face while experimenting with love. She deems it as not a scary thing but a well-rounding thing. Alessia paints that it is okay to go through that daunting period with love because it will bring you comfort and warmth in the future. As she steps into this new era, it’s clear that Alessia Cara is not just returning—she’s evolving, and she’s inviting us along for the ride.
