There are few feelings as powerful as nostalgia. It is perhaps the most bittersweet of all emotions; remembering the best times of your life while mourning the fact that those times are past is an incredibly unique feeling. On his new song “Summertime Classics”, NBC’s The Voice star Bay Simpson presents the listener with a smooth, warm dose of sonic nostalgia. The atmosphere Simpson creates perfectly resembles the feeling of driving down an empty road, windows down, with good music and a gorgeous sunset behind you. Hailing from the legendary Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Simpson’s roots are far from subtle on the track. With a voice rich and proud, it’s easy to see that the stories he tells on the song are from the heart, making the subject matter all the more relatable and easy to connect with.
The music itself does an excellent job of enforcing the feel of the song. It is quite simple and catchy in its melodies and instrumentation, and in that way, it resembles a summer evening-easy and laid back. Although just 20 years old, Simpson’s perspective resembles that of someone who has far more years of life under their belt. His ability to paint a picture of his memories of being a young man, wild and carefree, is both deeply honest and relatable. On “Summertime Classics”, Simpson does a superb job of utilizing his memories and songwriting talents to whip up a summertime classic of his own, and it is a must-add to any summer playlist.
