On November 16th, indie pop outfit Boyscott returned to Nashville to celebrate the release of their sophomore album, Spellbound, with a show at the iconic Blue Room. With humble beginnings as a solo project by former Belmont University student Scott Hermo Jr., Boyscott’s highly anticipated return to their hometown did not disappoint. Joined by Emma Wiler on background vocals and keys, Noah Dardaris on drums, Davey Alaimo on bass, and Thomas Bora on guitar, Hermo and the band brought the excited audience a night of surf-rock inspired indie bliss. Opening the show with “After Dark”, the lead single from Spellbound, the audience was immediately entranced by the ethereal surfy guitar riffs and catchy melodies. The setlist was a perfect mix of old favorites from the band’s debut album Goose Bumps, and brand new tunes that created waves of euphoric nostalgia.
The combinations of moody songs and upbeat choruses mirrored the ebb and flow of waves, perfectly apt for the surf inspired band. Hermo’s ability to connect with the audience through playful banter and genuine stories was truly remarkable. Multiple times throughout the show, Hermo exclaimed “hip hip” and the audience was ready to say “hooray!” every time. As the evening came to a close with hits “Nova Scotia 500” and “Killer Whale”, it was impossible not to be impressed with the band’s lush instrumentation and atmospheric vocals. Singing along to these songs, the audience knew that they had witnessed something special at the Blue Room. Boyscott has definitely cemented themselves as a fun, must-see live act in the indie pop scene.
