Last week, Allison Russell promoted love, equality, and hope on her All Returners Tour stop in Nashville. Not only did Russell come to the Ryman Auditorium with a powerful message in mind, but she also showed her extraordinary musical talent and shined a spotlight on incredible musical guests. Opening the show, folk singer songwriter Kara Jackson set the night off on a frankly extraordinary note. The former National Youth Poet Laureate showcased her unique and resonant voice along with her intricate songwriting skill. Jackson even gave a whole new name to covers of already iconic songs like Kara Dalton’s “Right, Wrong or Ready.”
Following Jackson’s performance, Russell took the stage with her talented band members. She performed a wide array of songs, some highlights including “Superlover,” “Persephone.” “Eve Was Black,” and “Demons.” It seemed Russell had an endless reserve of energy as she danced entrancingly around the stage, delivering emotional and powerful vocals. Russell brought on several guests, including her partner JT, her daughter, and the magnificent Tennessee Freedom Singers. At the end of the show, Russell even ventured into the crowd during her call-and-response song “Demons.” Each of these actions showed that while the show was of course about music, it was also about human connection. Additionally, it was the last stop of the All Returners Tour, so the energy in the room felt even more heightened and magical. Both Jackson and Russell left the Ryman audience with their hearts aglow and hope abounding.
