On April 22, comedian and musician Kyle Gordon brought nonstop laughter to the Nashville bar and venue 3rd and Lindsley. Gordon’s nationwide tour comes after the viral success of his songs that satirize different genres or niches of music. For example, his hit song “Planet of the Bass (feat. DJ Crazy Times & Ms. Biljana Electronica)” parodies the fun, mindless Eurodance music that reigned in the 1990’s. For each genre he parodies, Gordon invents a colorful character such as the aforementioned DJ Crazy Times. Coming into the show, I was excited yet wary, wondering how Gordon would execute so many different characters and vocal styles live throughout the night. Yet, Gordon proved that he is a performer through and through as he seamlessly transitioned from one wild persona to the next, aided by simple wigs or small costume changes. To start off the show, Gordon sang “Girls Are the Best (feat. Tanya McCabe)” adorned with a blonde wig. In this song, Gordon as McCabe repeats the phrase “every good person is a girl,” playfully parodying empowering girlboss country anthems.
After the opening song, Gordon switched between countless genres, like nü metal (“Crawl to Me – feat. Stool Sample), cringy millennial pop (“We Will Never Die – feat. Kody Redwing and the Broken Hearts”) and even Irish rebel music (“The Irish Drinking Song (feat. The Gammy Fluthers)”). Gordon expertly molded his voice and physicality to each new character, showing impressive musical and comedic range. After the show, Gordon even stayed to take photos with waiting fans, a kind gesture to all who came to support him. I would also be remiss to forget Gordon’s spectacular backing band Mojohand, who kept the show alive with skilled performances in every satirized genre. The country-rock band also opened the show and rallied the crowd with their energetic performances. Throughout the entire night, fans danced, sang along, and filled the bar venue with genuine laughter. Gordon proved that not only does he have the skills to form an online audience, but also to captivate a live crowd.
